Clinton and China

1. Clinton did not have a background in China but he had a background in Taiwan. He had visited Taiwan four times but had never seen China.

2. She said if the MFN was lifted then investors in the toy industry in China would lose money due to higher prices. Shoe companies and textiles would also lose money because of how high the prices would go up.

3. The quid pro quo was that if China made positive changes in human rights, then America would stop supporting Taiwan as much.

4. Congress tried not to provoke the MFN. Clinton kept the MFN in and China wanted the MFN to encompass more, but they did not speak up because they did not want to disrespect Clinton.

5. The business community was investing heavily in China. 83,437 contracts were signed worth $111 billion in investment. Over 6700 companies were American companies. China is leading the world business community.

6. The US learns that China is testing nuclear devices so America imposes sanctions. Also China is sending missiles to Pakistan. The business community wants relations with China to go back to normal.

7. North Korea had nuclear testing programs in it. North Korea said they would withdraw from Nucleaur Proliferation Treaty. Clinton Wants to compromise through China to try to get North Korea to stop testing their Nucleaur weapons.

8. The US does not want the games to be played in China because of bad human rights in China.

9. The Clinton administration would create a policy of engagement with China where they are willing to talk with the Chinese on all levels of government and on a wide range of subjects. They would also lift the ban on military contacts.

10. I think China likes this new policy because it gives them more freedom. They would see the US as weaker because the US went back on their policies and made new ones. However, I do not think it matters how weak the US looks, they could still beat the Chinese in conflict.

Schooling Problems

After seeing the video again, as I saw it last year, I have picked up on new things. Even though the US is beat by China and India in high school, the students still have more success. The kids in the other countries were disappointed because they did not get in where they wanted to, yet in the US, the kids got into where they wanted to for what they wanted. The opportunity is still greater for the US kids because they have a more well rounded social life and then still get where they want to be. I think this shows that the US has more fun while sill meeting the same if not greater success rate as the Chinese or Indians do. They may not think we are as successful but comparatively, I would say we are more successful. We do less and still end up mainly where we want to.

Hardships of Ruling a Country

Before this week I did not know that China was in such disarray after Moa ruled. I did not know how much Deng had inherited when he became ruler of China. After doing the activity in class to try to help China I have a new respect for Deng because we only "fixed" China through activity, Deng had to do it in reality and that would be much harder. Unexpected problems would arise and they would bog down progress at mending the nation back to its former glory. Deng had a goal to make China much more successful than it had been in years and with his reforms he managed to make many Chinese cities prosperous once more. Even if he was not entirely good to the peasants, he deserves some respect for launching such drastic reforms and fixing China as much as he did.

China with America

I honestly forget what we are supposed to blog about this weekend but I am going to guess that it is a summary of the week.  I did not know that America and China were so opposed to each other after they became communists.  I had just assumed that relations with China had always been strained, not that the US cut off all communications with them.  I also find it odd that America cut off the communications and they were the ones to seek out relations again.  Seems pretty bi polar to me.  I am beginning to crash from all that Super Bowl nervous adrenaline and now my typing has become very slow.  As far as relations with China went, i actually think America got more.  We did not get out of Vietnam the way we wanted, and China appeared to be the winner.  But in the end we were going to lose Vietnam and we still kept Taiwan, so nothing really changed except now we have a good source of child labor and sweatshops.  Terrible to think about but true.  Well yay to the iPads and supporting terrible worker conditions in China.  For what the iPad can do school wise (very little) I don't think it's worth it, and I don't normally have strong opinions on work environments.  Well here's to BHS and supporting terrible conditions in China.  NOTE: THIS IS ALL SARCASM..IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE THINK I AM SERIOUS AND WANT TO COMPLAIN, DON'T BOTHER, I DO NOT CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK. Thank you and goodnight :) <-- (smiley for emphasis)
